Steelhead Angling - on the Kalum River British Columbia Canada
by Noel Gyger

Ever had a "fishing hole" where you knew the success rate was almost 100 percent? That's usual on the upper Kalum River for spring steelhead. Jim Teeny started calling these river's massive fish "sweet-hearts" and we use that happy term often. For the Kalum River presents an angling paradise, with uncrowded water in a wilderness setting. I'm lucky enough to live here and to have the opportunity and privilege to angle for steelhead in the springtime when other nearby famous rivers such as the Copper, Bulkley, Kispiox, Morice and Babine close.

Cradle Mountain National Park - Well Worth a Visit
By Karen Breeden

I remember the first time I visited Cradle Mountain National Park in Tasmania, Australia's beautiful island state. The sun was out and it was a lovely summer's day.

Places like this were just made for perfect days like this, I thought to myself.

Having arrived early in the morning, my friend Samer and I went straight to the Visitor Information Centre. Parks and Wildlife staff were on hand to help with our questions. After some discussion with them, we decided that we would go to Marion's Lookout.Marion's Lookout was named by Gustav Weindorfer, after Marion Cowle, his sister-in-law. And who was Gustav Weindorfer? He was a wonderful Austrian man whom we can thank for playing a role in the preservation of this very special part of Tasmania.

Wilderness Backpacking Trails in British Columbia - Lesson 5 - This and That
By Robert Bannon

Using the word Trail when referring to backpacking in the British Columbia wilderness can be misleading and it almost caused us to omit an important piece of equipment. As experienced car campers and backyard barbecuers, we left a lot to be desired when it came to backpacking the real deal. We had taken some practice hikes and camping excursions and assumed that a trail was, in fact, a trail.

Rock Climbing Pictures
By Peter Gitundu

We always want to preserve the memories of the activities that mean something to us, those that brought joy and excitement along our paths of life. For rock climbing lovers, the joy, excitement and thrill that comes with the activity is just too sweet to be forgotten and there is therefore no better way of capturing the memories and keeping them alive than by taking pictures during the rock climbing.

The pictures can serve two purpose, one is to remind the climbers of the excitement they feel when they get to the peak of a cliff and see the world under their feet, while the other purpose is to show the people who have never engaged in this activity how it is like to be a mountaineer. In other words, the many of us who cannot afford to engage in this activity have a chance to a have a glimpse of what it is all about.

British Columbia - A Mountain Biking Haven
by Tony B

There are few places in the world that can market themselves as literal Meccas of mountain biking. The Pacific Northwest is a great place to find dozens of trails. The beautiful forests and beaches of the coastlines are perfect for an hour of casual riding or a weekend long excursion.

The North Shore area in British Columbia is considered one of the true hotspots of mountain biking and from all over the world avid mountain bikers arrive to traverse the hills of the Burrard Inlet and the trails of Mt. Fromme, Cypress Mountain, and Mt. Seymour. Also in the general area, you'll find amazing riding in Coquitlam's Eagle Mountain and Burke Mountain. Together, these numerous mountain ranges comprise one of the best places in Canada and possibly the world to mountain bike.

British Columbia For Spring Skiing
By S. Kate Hobbs

While many people associate spring break with surfing and sunning on the beach, others prefer a winter wonderland. If you want crisp weather, spectacular natural views and a wide variety of activities, look no further than British Columbia. The entire province is full of fun things to do during March break. Skiing is obviously the first thing you think about for your spring break vacation in British Columbia.

Ski season is in full effect until early April so try out the North Shore slopes while you are there. The Whistler-Blackcomb site will be the location of the 2010 Winter Olympics. You can catch a preview by staying in Cypress, the largest of the North Shore ski resorts. Cypress Mountain is full of activities for visitors of all ages. In addition to downhill skiing, there is a cross-country area, snow tubing and other activities during the evening.

Snowboarding - Chamonix Vs Dolomites
By Jamey Wheeler

"Snowboarding in Europe" is pretty much synonymous with "blue skies and great snow"; the only difficult part about planning a trip to the European slopes is deciding where to go. There are many factors to take into consideration when making this decision, including whether to hire a car or book a transfer; is the resort family friendly; nightlife/après ski; self-catered or catered and much more. Hopefully by the time you've narrowed down the mitigating factors you'll be left with few resorts from which to choose.

Here's a quick comparison of two of my holidays:

Chamonix: - Arabba, Dolomites:

9 people - 4 people

Hired a van - Airport transfer (coach)

Self-catering chalet - Self-catering condo

Less than one hour from Geneva airport - 3+ hours from airport

World-Class Scuba Diving in Cozumel
By Lee Breeze

Ever since famous oceanographer and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau revealed Cozumel's underwater beauty to the rest of the world in a 1961 documentary, Cozumel, Cancun and the Riviera Maya region have consistently ranked among the diving community's favorite destinations. What the world saw through the late Cousteau's camera lenses was a natural aquarium beyond compare, with swaying coral gardens, waves of colorful tropical fish, steep walls that fall deep into the ocean floor, sunken galleons and tunnels that seem to go on forever. With a visibility of up to 200 feet, miles of coral reefs, and water so clear that scuba divers seem to fly instead of swim, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya region attract thousands of divers per year.

Vacation Destination: Canada's Western National Parks
by Judith Schwader

We watched in dismay, the dark clouds massing at an alarming rate above the granite peaks of the Canadian Rockies in Jasper National Park. An afternoon rain shower was brewing, and it was going to start pouring before we could return to our campsite on the Kicking Horse River.

Fortunately, Canada's western parks have a strict bare camp policy due to the presence of grizzly bears, meaning that almost everything has to be stowed away before leaving camp. There was nothing laying around our site that could be damaged by rain, so we decided not to worry about the change in weather.

How to Survive a Forest Fire
By Jonsky Sicuna

Forest fires are either started deliberately or by accident. In either case, it destroys not only the surrounding wildlife but also the lives of people who are caught in between the fires or people with a home nearby.

Forest fires are prone to happen in any dry, wooded area especially in areas covered with conifers, which is highly flammable. This likelihood is further increased by the abundance of dead and fallen wood or when there is a drought season.

Check for how long the drought has been going on. The trail manager will likely have all the information you need about the condition of the area. They will also post that information to let the public know about the current level of fire danger.

When you think of a river, the last thing you think about is probably how strong its water really is. You are more than likely to think about calm flowing water that brushes over stones at the bottom of the river. Whatever you think about, it's definitely not how powerful the river is.
